Inside Young NRG Productions- One day with Mr Nitro -Winner Jungle Department Remix Contest- Interview

In Conversation with Mr Nitro - Different Drumz

DJ Nitro a.k.a Mr Nitro is the creator and co owner of Different Drumz (www.differentdrumz.co.uk) and has been mixing and scratching since 1993. His love for the underground music scene all started from a very young age long before then as he grew up listening to hardcore, oldschool, jungle and drum and bass on a wide variety of pirate radio stations such as Dream, Origin, Rude and Kool FM.

Predominantly a Drum and Bass DJ, Nitro has been collecting vinyl for many years ranging from Old school and Jungle all the way through to jump up and more importantly the best in liquid, tech, minimal and deep DnB that he plays today and has followed the scene his whole life. Nitro has also been producing his own tracks since 2003 (when he has the time between the many projects he always has going on) using many programs including Reason and Cubase.

INTERVIEW:

Hello and welcome to Young NRG Productions and BBFunk Blog.
Today I have been joined by amazing DJ and producer Mr Nitro.

Hi! Nice to have you here!

What are some words you would use to describe this year (2019)?

To be fair this year has been a pretty hectic one for me as I only returned in March from 6 months traveling round Bourneo, Australia, Thailand, Cambodia and Sri Lanka so i have just been getting my feet back on the ground, working hard, saving money and catching up with lots of music so busy, busy, busy haha

Jungle Department - District (Mr Nitro Remix)
Can you tell us what you like best about your track?

I really enjoyed getting my teeth into this remix as I have mainly been producing liquid tracks recently so was great to get stuck into something different and with a little more 'punch' and who does'nt like jungle right? I wanted to put my own spin on this remix so I changed up the pad synths with a whole new arangement and some sneaky reverse notes and gave it a hard hitting powerful bass line with lots of variation to keep things moving throughout the track.

Can you tell us about the new project you will be working on in 2020?

I have lots of projects in the pipeline for 2020 involving lots of collaborations with other artists too including a future jungle EP that I am putting together with my brother Eazy G, a liquid dnb EP with Carlo EQ, and also some tracks with Twintone, Geety a few others. I will also be doing some more remixes and free downloads too.

Imagine walking inside the studio; please, can you speak to me through a typical day? What are your habits?

Well, at the moment most of my main studio is still in storage sadly so I am currently just producing tracks using my laptop when I get the time between all of my other ongoing projects like my website & graphic design and of course running the Different Drumz radio station and record label too. That said, I find that I get most of my music production done very late at night and into the early hours when there are no other distractions.

How will you choose the software and add-ons you use?

I produce my music using Cubase as my main DAW, I used to use Reason and I have tried various others like Ableton & Bitwig but I find Cubase works best for me and it is such a learning curve when you change DAW so I am sticking with that! I use various plugins and VST's but my favourites are Cakewalk - Z3ta,  Spectrasonics -Trilogy & Atmosphere and a few from Native Instruments.

Are you an avid believer of learning an instrument?

I would like to play an instrument but aside from playing a little bit of piano my main instruments are all digital production based or my beloved Technics 1200's.

What is the only piece of DJ / production equipment that you can not live with?

Like I said most of my main studio equiptment is currently still in storage so I would not be able to live without my laptop and the moment but the main thing I miss is my main production PC and my Technics 1200's!

So what are your thoughts on technology aiding the technique of DJing?

There is so much technology available to DJ's these days and its great as the possibilities are endless but I am oldschool at heart so for me you can't beat mixing and scratching with vinyl on a pair of Technics!

Any artists / DJs / producers in particular that really influenced you?

I have a lot of artists that have influenced me over the years with my DJ'ing and music production but the main ones that spring to mind are DJ Hype as I grew up listening to his tracks and mixes back in the jungle era of the mid 90's and the amazing production skills of the likes of Calibre, Spectrasoul, LSB, Spy & Technimatic to name a few.

What is the music scene like at this moment in your country?

I have spent most of my life living in the South London area of the UK so the drum and bass scene has always been huge and it continues to thrive, there is literally always a decent DnB night on somewhere nearby with some top artists playing!

Often, certain cities are related to certain sounds and sub-genres. Do you think that living in your city is reflected in your music?

Hmm tricky one, I spent most of my life living in the South London & Surrey areas and this year have been living near Brighton in West Sussex but personally I do not think that I have noticed any differences with my music production wherever I have been based... I always just like finding new inspiration for tracks and keep pushing new music out as often as I can.

Thanks
Nitro & The Different Drumz Family
